Trade growth has been anaemic since 2010. Already before the 2008 Global Crisis hit, the rate of growth of the ratio of global trade to GDP had slowed considerably. Most recent data show trade values declining. Has global trade peaked? Or is the trade slowdown simply a reflection of the state of the world economy and largely a cyclical phenomenon? This is the question that is addressed by the contributors to this CEPR/EUI eBook. While there is no consensus on the relative importance of cyclical versus structural factors, the analyses help to understand the forces that are at play and highlight the importance for the world economy looking forward of focusing on traderelated policies as well as on the macroeconomic policies that are needed to revitalise global economic growth prospects.
