Abstract
Der Beitrag grenzt Gegenstand und Zugriff der transnationalen Geschichte ein und setzt sie zur europäischen Geschichte in Beziehung. Transnationale Geschichte erweist sich dabei nicht als ein Ansatz, der spezifisch für die europäische Geschichte entwickelt worden wäre oder in Europa seinen Ausgangspunkt hätte. Trotzdem hat die transnationale Geschichte für die historische Europaforschung ein hohes Potential: Der Beitrag vertritt dabei die These, dass Europa mindestens so sehr ein Raum ist, in dem sich transnationale Bindungen besonders verdichtet haben, wie umgekehrt diese Verknüpfungen Europa erst als solches hervorgebracht haben.
This article delineates the subject and approach of transnational history and relates it to European history. It shows that transnational history was neither developed specifically for European history nor had its origins in Europe. Nevertheless, transnational history has great potential for research on Europe's past: this article argues that Europe is as much a space where transnational ties have become particularly strong as one created by these bonds in the first place.
