Control over the Geneva printing trade, readers censorship, and the editorial policy of the local authorities have been little studied. An analysis of primary materials and specific cases reveals that civil powers and religious authorities were constantly battling. Magistrates and ministers, printers and publishers were all involved in negotiating censorship. Diplomatic and commercial considerations frequently won over ideological priorities.en
