This chapter will analyse the populous Pentecost depicted in the cupola of cardinal Quiroga's private oratory in Toledo (1585-1590 ca.) within the framework of the circulation of artistic models between Italy and Spain in the early modern period. The parallelisms of this iconographical variation with the one promoted by Gregorio XIII during his universalistic and expansionist papacy, together with the revival of local devotions through hagiographies and chorographies that became crucial in Toledo during those years, will be the starting points for an exploration of the uses of image and representation in the late sixteenth-century.en
