In the 1960s Europeans were challenged to decide whether the abstractions being introduced by the behavioural revolution into political science constituted pretentious jargon or mistaken translation into "German-American" or added theoretical meaning . Richard Rose describes how, as an American with an Oxford doctorate, his critical scrutiny identified substantial additional value whereas Hans Daalder, a Dutchman socialized in the LSE mode of dismissing abstractions, tended to take the opposite view.
