This article analyses the role of the EU in the 2005 United Nations World Summit, with specific reference to environmental protection and sustainable development issues. The article will discuss the EU priorities in the pre-Summit process; its negotiating position during the informal sessions and the high-level segment of the sixtieth session of the General Assembly; and its pledges in the successive discussions on the follow-up and implementation of the Summit outcome. It will conclude by evaluating the impact of the EU on the final Summit Outcome Document, and the challenges the EU faces in effectively contributing to follow-up and implementation.en
