The Florence School of Regulation organised a workshop on ‘Beyond Kyoto. The initial experience with the EU Emission Trading Scheme and the prospects for a global climate strategy after 2012’ on 20 October 2006 at the European University Institute in Florence. Nearly thirty experts from the energy industry, regulatory and government bodies, NGOs and research organisations took part. The workshop had three main objectives: 1) Learning from the initial experience in emission trading systems in Europe and the US. 2) Examining the requirements for a long-term global strategy on climate change. 3) Exploring the range of instruments and institutional requirements needed to succeed in implementing a long-term strategy.
