From the “indispensable power” to the unilateralist moment of the “war on terror”, from the 2008 financial shock to present-day reflections on its decline, post-Cold War America has grown increasingly and bitterly divided on its place and role in the world. Within an anthology on social, cultural and political transformations of the United States after the Cold War, the essay explores the diverging paths of domestic political cultures, with a specific focus on the exceptionalist imagination that fuels an antagonistic perception of the global space.en
