Abstract
In the Spanish monarchy, the municipal reforms of the second half of the eighteenth century constituted the first rehearsal for the modern state. The political practices that had characterised the monarchy until then started showing symptoms of exhaustion. In the face of the collapse of those practices, actors at different centres of power had to ideate and implement new formulae to organise life in common. The new practices were the result of the municipal reforms, which were in turn the consequence of conflicts and negotiations in which local actors played a key role.
