dc.description.abstractThis paper aims to investigate the meaning of the expression "Christian roots of Europe" in the public discourse of John Paul II. The first part of the analysis deals with the cultural origins of the reference to the Christian roots of Europe, as it entered the Catholic vocabulary in the early 1980s, and with the multiple meanings of the expression in the discourse of the pope. In the second part of the article a more recent development is analysed, i.e. the debate on the "Judaeo-Christian roots of Europe" at the European Convention in the early 2000s.en
