Abstract
In the course of European history, religion and politics have enjoyed a wide variety of linkages. As a result of state-building processes, demographic changes, and migration flows, Europe today hosts a ‘a bewildering variety’ of church–state relations as well as of legal, institutional, and political arrangements related to religion–state connections. This chapter looks at the three regions in Europe marked by three confessional-institutional legacies there are points of similarity as well as of contrast when it comes to managing religious diversity.
