Abstract
The silk industry in New Spain has an important place in the broader history of artisanal production in the early modern world. This industry was introduced in the early sixteenth century, and it quickly developed into one of the most significant urban crafts. The formation of silk guilds played a central role in shaping this trade, as they not only regulated access to the craft and the quality of production. In this context, apprenticeship became a crucial tool for the acquisition of technical knowledge and the reproduction of crafts. This dataset focuses on the apprenticeship in the silk guilds of New Spain between 1569 and 1644 allowing for a more detailed reconstruction of the labour market profile for apprentices in silk guilds during the second half of the sixteenth and the first half of the seventeenth centuries.
