Abstract
The concept of development aid securitisation highlights the risk of the instrumentalization of development policy, where the motives shift from human and sustainable development goals to self-serving geopolitical objectives, such as security and stability. As the academic literature lacks sufficient assessment of the securitisation of the European Global Gateway initiative in India, this research fills this gap. A case study of the EU-India Connectivity Partnership is conducted, utilising a discourse analysis through the lens of the securitisation theory. This thesis has found that dynamics of development aid securitisation are evident in the EUGG in India. Overall, the EU not only securitises its discourse but often also politicizes it. In the economic sector, de-risking and profiting from the Indian economic rise; in the political sector, geopolitically strengthening strategic EU-India relations; and in the environmental sector, combating climate change and promoting energy security were identified.
