Abstract
With millions of people claiming asylum in Northern and Western Europe since 2015, this thesis explores the barriers asylum seekers face in entering the labour market. Through qualitative research, the data is collected from multiple sources, including expert interviews and online research repositories and explores the relationship between the demographics of asylum seekers, the political salience of migration, the political ideology of governments and the securitisation of asylum seekers, with three crucial aspects of labour market integration, the duration of the asylum process, the restrictions on work and the welfare benefits received by asylum seekers as they search for employment. The conclusion of this analysis is nuanced, with securitisation and political ideology being the most apparent causes of variance. However, all variables play a significant part due to their interrelated nature.
