Abstract
This concluding chapter draws together the key findings of the book, which has explored the evolving relationship between citizens, social movements and movement parties in shaping democratic quality in Europe. Throughout the book, we have argued that understanding contemporary democracy requires a more nuanced appreciation of how extra-institutional actors – protest movements and movement parties – interact with traditional political institutions. By examining this triple interaction, we shed light on the ways in which these dynamics have influenced three key dimensions of democratic quality: participation, competition and responsiveness. Our findings suggest that while institutional politics remain central to democracy, the role of social movements and movement parties has grown significantly, affecting both public attitudes and policy outcomes. In this chapter, we conclude by outlining the implications of these shifts for European politics and highlight potential policy responses to strengthen democratic quality in an era of increasing political turbulence.
