Abstract
Disinformation and online hate speech (OHS) pose threats to democratic integrity and public discourse globally, impacting institutions and individuals. However, research suggests that these phenomena’s perception and effect vary among sociodemographic groups. This study analyzes data from a national-representative survey (N=1,216) and uses logistic regressions to examine variations in the perception of disinformation and OHS as negative aspects of social media among Argentinian citizens. Argentina’s rising polarization and challenges stemming from these digital issues make it a pertinent case. The results show that demographic factors do not significantly predict perceptions of disinformation; instead, exposure to it is the primary determinant. In contrast, gender, age, social media use, and exposure to offensive content significantly predict OHS perceptions, with women and younger demographics perceiving OHS negatively. This research enhances the understanding of how different populations perceive digital challenges, providing valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders in Argentina and similar contexts.
