dc.description.abstractThe silk industry in New Spain was one of the most ambitious experiments in the transfer of technology and labour practices from Europe to the Americas. Introduced during the sixteenth century, it quickly established itself as an important branch of colonial production, drawing on both European expertise and indigenous knowledge. This database is designed to reconstruct the geography organisation of silk production in sixteenth-century New Spain. By linking places, processes, and commodities, it allows for a more nuanced understanding of how silk was cultivated, processed, and exchanged across a dispersed colonial landscape. This dataset also includes information related to the cochineal production as a comparative element in order to explore possible interactions and tensions between two labour-intensive industries.en
