dc.description.abstractDue to self-imposed restrictions on joint defence equipment production and technology cooperation, Japan has long been an isolated player in the global defence industry. However, as it is facing the most severe and complex strategic environment in recent history and it has dwindling domestic defence industrial bases, Japan is fundamentally revamping its approach to defence technology cooperation. How is Tokyo, once an isolated technological player, advancing international armament cooperation? Why does Japan’s defence technology cooperation with Europe matter? This policy brief argues that Japan’s aim is not only to fortify its defence industrial bases as deterrence but also to position itself as a trusted partner and an internationally competitive player by building credibility in industrial security.en
