Abstract
This article focuses on the ambitions of the Mexican state to attract German immigrants after the disastrous defeat in the war against the United States. In this effort, the Mexican government was supported by Carl Sartorius, a German emigrant and colonization agent in Mexico who traveled to his homeland shaken by the aftermath of the 1848 revolution. This collaboration was not only marked by mutual visions of «whitening» and «civilizing» the Mexican Republic through German colonists but also sheds light on the hidden links between the European revolutionary milieu, its imperial ambitions and contemporary political debates in Latin America.
