Abstract
This report explores the growing ties between Italy and Southeast Asia through its engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its main members. Despite lacking a dedicated strategic policy document for the whole ‘Indo-Pacific,’ Italy has steadily increased its political, economic and cultural presence in the region. The report examines key areas of cooperation, including security, economic development and socio-cultural exchanges by focusing on bilateral relations with ASEAN member states such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. The role of Italy in promoting multilateralism and its commitment to maintaining a rules-based international order are highlighted as core aspects of its regional strategy. The report concludes with policy recommendations to further enhance Italy’s strategic footprint in Southeast Asia and emphasises increased development cooperation and expanded investments in emerging industries like technology and defence.
