Abstract
Introduction to the book 'Sites of international memory': The statues, plaques, street names, practices, and other material and intangible forms of historical remembrance found in the cities and places where we live are everyday reminders that the collective memory of the past is everywhere. Some of these sites of memory are intended to celebrate and honor local events, others attest to the need to record and celebrate historical moments and people who are tied to wider narratives of nations and empires. This volume studies sites of international memory: the commemoration of a twentieth-century past when international ideas, institutions, and experiences also mattered.
