This paper reinterprets energy security using a layered framework that illustrates its historical and geopolitical development. The initial layer, grounded in the domestic use of resources, embodies the conventional concept of self-sufficiency. The second layer, influenced by global commodity trade and interdependencies, evolved with the rise of energy geopolitics. The contemporary layer, characterised by clean energy technologies and critical raw materials, introduces new vulnerabilities associated with supply chains. The paper illustrates that contemporary energy security is multidimensional, dynamic, and intricately linked to the global energy transition by correlating these layers with essential drivers: demand, trading, technological, social/political, economic/financial, environmental, and hybrid conflict.
