Abstract
The study at hand contributes to a better understanding of two recent phenomena: the backlash towards sexual and reproductive health and rights and the strategies of misappropriation. To reach this aim, the thesis conducts a Critical Frame Analysis and investigates misappropriation in NGOs statements between 2016 and 2023 at the United Nations. The centre piece of the analysis concerns the qualitative understanding of how NGOs build their framing: What specific misappropriating strategies are used? Which international legal instruments or treaties are part of the misappropriating framing? The thesis sheds light on these questions and enables a better understanding of the current backlash towards SRHR by specifically focusing on framing and the phenomenon of misappropriation of human rights. In the end, the thesis will find that conservative NGOs predominantly instrumentalise historical understandings of human rights to engage in misappropriation of SRHR.
