Abstract
The forthcoming EU AI Act is expected to be a comprehensive regulatory framework for human-centric artificial intelligence systems (AIS), ensuring the safe and ethical development, deployment, and use of AIS in the European Union. One of the key objectives of the AI Act is to prevent bias, discrimination, and unfair treatment in AI systems. This chapter summarizes and exemplifies the ways in which algorithmic discrimination can occur in AI systems and proceeds to critically examine the provisions related to non-discrimination in the AI Act and to assess their potential effectiveness in addressing such discrimination.
