Abstract
The European University Institute and the New York University School of Law are delighted to have jointly promoted, here in Florence, this important international conference on 'Progressive Governance for the 21st Century'. They are glad also to make available in this volume the proceedings of the Conference, including the background papers written by professors from both university institutions. It was appropriate that these two institutions, both so essentially international in nature and outlook, should have promoted this prospective meeting of minds between acadmics and eminent political world leaders.
