Abstract
The Historical Index of Ethnic Fractionalisation (HIEF) dataset contains an ethnic fractionalisation index for 165 countries annually since 1945 until 2013. The dataset draws on pre-existing information (see below) regarding the percentage of every ethnic group present in a country since 1945 and provides the corresponding ethnic fractionalisation index annually. The ethnic fractionalisation index corresponds to the probability that two randomly drawn individuals are not from the same ethnic group. The applications of HIEF pertain to the pattern of ethnic diversity across countries and over time. The dataset is elaborated from this pre-existing resource: Ethnic Groups Data from The Composition of Religious and Ethnic Groups (CREG) project initiated by the Cline Center for Democracy, University of Illinois at Urbana?Champaign, as part of its Societal Infrastructures and Development (SID) project. Contributors: Peter F. Nardulli, Cara J. Wong, Ajay Singh, Buddy Peyton, Joseph Bajjalieh.
