Abstract
In our Foreword article, “Gender and the Legal Academy” (“the Foreword”), we noted the current “gender gap” in the global legal academy—and called for renewed scholarly attention to this phenomenon, as well as collective efforts to overcome it. Part of this, we suggested, also entailed a willingness by legal scholars to embrace the idea of a truly “feminist legal academy.” In their generous and thought-provoking responses by way of Afterwords to the piece, Cora Chan, Jaclyn Neo, Ayelet Shachar, Shreya Atrey, and Stefano Osella (“the commentators”) directly answer this call—providing both a more granular account of the gender gap in different countries, its causes and consequences, and what is required to respond to it. Indeed, the commentators provide useful insights at four distinct, yet overlapping, levels: (i) the nuances of the current gender gap; (ii) what it means to overcome it, or create a feminist legal academy; (iii) the tools available or necessary for doing so; and (iv) the challenges of doing so. They also do so in the spirit of ongoing scholarly dialogue and exchange—the exact ethos we call for in the Foreword itself. The remainder of this Rejoinder seeks to capture some of these rich insights, as well as how they fit with the Foreword—and our evolving thoughts on these topics. It is, however, only the beginning of a full reply, which will require a much deeper, longer conversation amongst us all.
