Abstract
This chapter explores the role immigration plays in the ongoing crisis of liberal democracy; it covers four sub- themes that build upon each other: (1) the liberal tendency in the immigration policy field before the contemporary “illiberal turn;” (2) the transformation of socio-political conflicts upon which this rise of illiberalism and the opposition to immigration are based; (3) the phenomenon of so- called “illiberal liberalism” targeting especially Muslim immigrants; and (4) the role of political trust and public opinion about immigration. The chapter underlines that the illiberal tide is not only a threat to liberalism or specifically to the rights of migrants but to democracy as such.
