The Digital Economy Act has generated a great deal of controversy since its announcement as the Digital Economy Bill. While many of its provisions do not warrant outcry from the general public, the sections dealing with online copyright infringement have led to heated debate on and off-line. This article will give an overview of this contentious piece of legislation, including its origins and development, the speed in which it was enacted, and whether the legislation will effectively achieve its aims, or hinder the innovation it seeks to encourage.
