The chapter analyses the evolution of conceptions and practices of democracies in social movements in the last three centuries. It looks at the role played by social movements before first democratization through the development of multiple public spheres, at the mobilization of the labour movement for an enlargement of democratic rights and to nowadays conceptions and practices of democracy “from below”.
