dc.description.abstract | This chapter examines the construction of an index of state fragility by the United States Agency of International Development. It explores the genesis of the interest in the measuring of state-ness, and describes the methodological and conceptual problems of such an enterprise. It argues that the quantification of state-ness produced by the Index is unsatisfactory, but suggests nonetheless that the creation of such technologies of measurement have powerful consequences. | |
