This chapter discusses the reasons for massive apostasies from Orthodoxy into Islam among the non-Russian population in the Middle Volga region between the 1820s and 1860s. It also analyses the reasons for the failure of orthodox missionaries to stem the tide and to integrate this population into the Orthodox community of the Russian empire.
