Trying to combine different approaches (cultural history of translations, book history, material bibliography), this paper will focus on the role that translations had in the Italian circulation of William Robertson’s Histories during the second half of the 18thcentury. I will examine some paradigmatic examples, by paying attention to both textual and paratextual adaptations elaborated by the publishers and translators in order to attract readers’ attention (lexical omissions or additions, manipulations of sentences, insertion of prefaces, cartographic materials, notes, tables of contents).
