Plenty of current debates on the expansionism of modern regional powers or the nationalistic fanaticism across Europe and the Middle East highlight the wide use and misuse of the borders’ concept. The latter can at the same time be not only guarantees of international law, in the context of mutual recognition of nation-states, or channels for trade and economic growth from the point of view of foreign investments and global development, but also tools of propaganda, stimulating conflicts among the states. This study explores recent developments in international relations and their geopolitical footprint on borders management. On the one side, the famous approach to "clashing of civilizations" requires "virtual" borderlines that unite/divide the cultures of peoples, mostly among different nations and religions, often challenging the officially recognized territorial boundaries. On the other side, the boost of extreme nationalism and, possibly, the complete re-establishment of protectionism in the hinterland of the once extremely liberal West, confirm the immense primacy of the territorial frontiers as a raw material for understanding the ideas that motivate politicians, generals and scholars.
