Abstracten
How equivalent remains the central examination between schools in the Netherlands? Discrepancies between the grades of the school exam and the national central exam of secondary education between 1998 and 2005 The Dutch secondary education comprehends a final examinations system in which students take both a school exam (that differs among every school) and a national central exam. We analyse the discrepancies in the grades for both these examinations between 1998 and 2005, as they are a threat to the equivalence of the examinations between schools. Based on the Kwaliteitskaarten Voortgezet Onderwijs (Quality-cards of Secondary Education) collected by the Schools Inspectorate, we first examined the discrepancies in the grades for the period of 1998 till 2005, classified by type of education and also by school and then explained these discrepancies by using school- and examination-characteristics. Our most important finding is the trend towards growing discrepancies in the school examgrades and central exam-grades. Moreover, this growth turns out to be the strongest among the VWO (the highest level of education). We also find a high correlation between the several years, as well as between the types of education, which points out a strong continuity in the individual examination results. This indicates the fact that the intrinsic value of the diplomas in education has been deteriorating.en
