Abstract
The essay situates the European Socialist regimes’ economic strategies for the 1970s in the broader context of global financial trends and international politics. Thus, it relates their initial successes and consequent failures not only to domestic conditions, as is usually the case in current literature, but also to the shifting mix of opportunities an constraints in the global arena. It provides an overall assessment of those strategies’ results and connects them to the demise of those regimes in 1989.
