This chapter highlights the key role religion plays in contemporary debates about gender and the politicization of gender in today’s polarized environment. It explores the role religion plays in the life of women, and looks at female activism in religious, ideological movements. It also discusses the role of religion and gender ideologies in the contemporary global rise of right-wing populism and authoritarianism, and highlights the use of the gender equality rhetoric in mobilizations against the ‘religious other’, i.e., Muslim migrants and minorities.
