The combination of the pandemic and geopolitical tensions on the European continent seem to have eclipsed the political developments in the Western Balkans. Yet the signals coming from recent electoral rounds in Europe and the region, are a worrying reminder of the importance of keeping the enlargement process alive. Recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron and EP President Roberta Metsola that “the Western Balkans should be given a clear perspective on joining the EU” within “a reasonable timeframe”, could give a new impetus to the negotiations, but will this be enough to overcome the many remaining hurdles, and win back the waning public support for EU accession across the region?
