This paper explores an emerging type of gender violence that happens online, namely image-based sexual abuse (IBSA). This type of abuse is affecting women worldwide and lacks a comprehensive regulatory response despite the significant harm that it causes. For this reason, the research question of the paper is: What are the challenges and opportunities of regulating IBSA? In order to address this question, a literature review is used to engage with papers from law, sociology, technology, and psychology to create a new lens through which to understand IBSA and offer a categorization of the challenges. The paper offers policy recommendations that aim to be comprehensive, practical, and in line with the needs of IBSA victim-survivors.
