There has been growth in the promotion of social entrepreneurship as a tool for development in countries in the Global South. Social Entrepreneurship is the process by which individuals, startups, and entrepreneurs develop and fund solutions that directly address social issues. Many Sub-Saharan Africans have taken up social entrepreneurship to address problems faced by their immediate communities and beyond; gaining financial assistance through grants mostly from foreign-based private foundations and organisations. Using semi-structured expert interviews, this research will assess how grant financing from foreign-based private entities shapes social entrepreneurship and the understanding of social impact. It also assesses if there is an equitable relationship between and a transfer of operational norms from the funders to the enterprises. Ultimately, the study concludes that private financiers play a major role in determining which kind of enterprises thrive, which countries to fund, and how to measure and report impact. They also shape the way in which social enterprises operate, transferring their operational norms of management.
