This study proposes an ethical discussion and evaluation of the European Commission’s proposal of a Regulation on nature restoration by investigating which kind of environmental ethics it underpins. By employing the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF) and a theoretical framework grounded in environmental ethics, this study argues that the proposal underscores the ethics of mastery over nature tending to partnership with nature. In doing so, this study bridges policy and ethics studies. It contributes to the literature on the application of the NPF showcasing its salience in the ethical realm, while also contributing to the literature on environmental ethics, especially that concerned with nature restoration. Finally, this study calls for a more robust ethical discourse within EU’s policymaking on restoration and on environmental protection at large, suggesting the mainstreaming of an ethics of partnership with nature as the way forward.
