The establishment of Chinatowns in the United States during the 19th century marked the beginning of a significant era for Chinese immigrants. Prior to the immigration reforms of 1965, these enclaves, like Manhattan Chinatown and San Francisco Chinatown, served as primary canters of settlement due to the restrictive policies such as the Chinese Exclusion Act. However, with the influx of new immigrants post-1965, new Chinatowns emerged, notably Flushing in New York and the Richmond District in San Francisco. This shift in settlement patterns raises questions about the evolution of traditional versus new Chinatowns in facilitating immigrant integration and economic mobility. By analyzing Manhattan Chinatown and Flushing Chinatown, this thesis attempts to describe the evolution of this Chinese settlement.
