Economic and Political Determinants of Policy Responses to Financial Crises dataset

Abstract

The dataset is composed of two parts. The first one is a detailed dataset on regulatory, monetary and fiscal policy during financial crises. Such dataset should provide a useful reference for research on the policy responses to financial crises. The dataset comprises an extensive description of the policies implemented in the years preceding and following banking-, currency- and debt crises. The dataset comprises three sets of indicators, including a number of sub-indicators, which aim to reflect the stance of monetary and fiscal policy, as well the regulatory approaches taken around 41 financial crises. We collected new information on the stance of fiscal policy with the narrative approach, by reading official documents of the International Monetary Fund, especially stand-by arrangements, reporting data on the primary balance over gdp for non-OECD countries before 2000, which are not available in existing datasets. The second part collects information about the political and social landscape around financial crises. The data collection was part of a Research Grant financed by the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).
