Abstract
This chapter maps the market definition issues for multi-sided markets in EU competition law. In particular, the research question discussed is how to define the relevant product market in antitrust cases involving multi-sided platforms. To answer the normative-evaluative research question, the chapter employs a doctrinal legal analysis informed by law and economic arguments. First, it introduces the structural features of multi-side markets and platforms that play a fundamental role in both market definition and the overall competitive assessment. Then, the chapter questions the role and limitations of market definition in EU competition law before reviewing the general principles set by the current Market Definition Notice (MDN). It also elaborates on defining the relevant antitrust market, focusing on the product dimension and, marginally, on the geographic dimension. Finally, the chapter analyses the product market definition issues vis-à-vis multi-sided markets, comparing the one-market and multi-market approaches considering leading antitrust cases from the US and the EU and the flexible solution endorsed by the MDN. The conclusion recapitulates the findings.
