This article analyses the phenomenon of transatlantic migration, focusing on the passengers of a single ship, the Agate Calera, a frigate sailing under Dutch colours with a multinational crew, covering the round trip between Cadiz and Veracruz. The ship's last journey is placed in historical context; then, the article focusses on the crew as migrants and the ship as a site of intercultural socialization. Finally, four atypical personal stories of migration are offered : a sick sailor, two deserters and a returning migrant.
