In the 19th century marriage relationships between the nobility and the bourgeoisie of Piacenza changed very sharply: from an endogamie situation to a wide matrimonial exchange system. In accord with a well-established interpretative tradition, this variation in relationships seems to have been preceded by a remarkable accentuation of the land-holding character of the various bourgeois groups, particularly evident in the case of the trading bourgeoisie. This variation favoured marriage alliances. Although here they present some peculiar characteristics derived from the division of the nobility into two separate groups: the titled nobility, rich and feudal in origin, and the untitled nobility, economically weak and of functionary origins. Until the end of the century marriage relations between bourgeois and titled nobles were rare, and it was the untitled group of nobles who re-established contacts by allying upwards (whith the titled nobility) as well as downwards (with the bourgeois families). Through this mediatory function the untitled nobility managed to gain a political weight by far superior to their economic importance. But they had to follow a policy of demographic expansion and hereditary fractioning which ulteriorly weakened their financial balance.
