| dc.description.abstract | Flight and asylum have long dominated public debates in Europe. Right-wing populist parties have gained significance in many countries by criminalising refugees and mobilising against them. An agreement that will allow the European Union to assume its responsibility towards worldwide refugee movements seems out of reach. The present volume contributes to the differentiation of these debates from a scientific perspective. On the one hand, it aims to inspire a more comprehensive reflection about flight and asylum. To this end, the contributions rethink the term ‘refugee’ and discuss a more humane and equitable approach to dealing with flight on the global level. In addition, the year 2015 is positioned in the long history of flight within and towards Europe. On the other hand, the volume presents empirical results on the political and civil response to the refugees as well as on their integration into the labour market and the opportunities and limits of their social and cultural participation. | en |
