The Japanese government has pushed forward an ambitious agenda to digitalise Japanese society. Digitalisation is not only seen by the Japanese government as a means to make governing Japan more efficient but also as a way to address the deteriorating demographic situation and the rapid depopulation of rural regions, and revitalise the rural economy by increasing the accessibility of public services and lessen paperwork associated with civic life. However, huge challenges lie ahead for the Japanese government to realise its vision for what it refers to as ‘Society 5.0.’ First, it needs to address the digital literacy age gap between different generations. Second, it needs to gain public trust in the government’s ability to keep and use personal information safely. Third, it needs to address cybersecurity issues by considering the best data security systems available regardless of the country of origin.en
