As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, millions of people were forced to flee to neighboring countries, mostly in Europe. To respond to this unprecedented influx, the EU offered protection to displaced persons by activating the Temporary Protection Directive. Given the limited period of temporary protection, I examine the extent to which existing EU policies on asylum and migration provide a solution to the long-term status of Ukrainian refugees in Europe. By conducting a comprehensive literature review, I explored available policy options. These include streamlining refugees into migratory or asylum channels, providing special status, or granting long-term resident status. Based on my analysis, a combination of the above options is the most efficient long-term strategy. This way, individuals can receive the most comprehensive and durable solution tailored to their specific needs.
