This essay explores the significance of the 2024 United States Presidential elections for the future of transatlantic relations. The argument is that American politics has evolved over the past three decades to a point where a deep rupture in the transatlantic partnership is possible. Donald Trump is not the problem, although his re-election as President would be problematic for many of America’s partners in Europe. The more important issue is the polarization of American society over issues related to race, globalization, and America’s role in the world.en
